A woman took to TikTok to share hilarious footage of her four-year-old Chihuahua Max responding to her commands in Spanish and ignoring her when she talks to him in English
A dog owner was left in hysterics when she realised the reason her new pup had been ignoring her was that he could only understand Spanish.
Kalee McGee explained that when she adopted four-year-old Chihuahua Max from the shelter, he had no paperwork about his background.
But because he was well behaved when she took him for walks, and he sits down when she gives him a treat, she assumed he’d had some training.
However, Kalee couldn’t work out why Max wasn’t listening to her.
Until one day when she finally figured it out – he only understood Spanish.
She shared the hilarious discovery on her TikTok account @kaleemcgee , where she said: “I’m gonna talk fast because your time is precious but this is hilarious and I have no one else to tell so please listen.
“We adopted a dog two, three weeks ago, a great little chihuahua four years old from the shelter, no information on him, absolutely adorable, super great.
“He sits when you have a treat in your hand not when you say sit, he knows what a crate is and he walks really well on a leash so it seems he has some training, but he won’t listen to us so.
“We’re trying to get him to sit, trying to get him to do this stuff for weeks and we can’t figure out why he won’t listen to us…”
Then they worked it out.
“He only speaks Spanish,” she said.
“Our little chihuahua doesn’t know English and has been looking at us like what are you talking about.
“I died when I found out so I’ve got to show you.”
In the next clip, when she says “Max come”, he just stands there.
But when she repeats the phrase in Spanish, he walks straight over to her wagging his tail.
The same thing happens when she tells Max to sit. In English he ignores her, and in Spanish, he does exactly what she says.
“I don’t speak Spanish so I know that wasn’t the best, we’ve been relying on Google Translate, but please if you have anything else let me know cause I would love to see how smart this cute little man is. I just don’t speak his language.”
Since being posted, the video has racked up more than 1.1 million likes and 17,000 comments from people who were impressed by Kalee’s dedication.
One person said: “How did you find out he speaks Spanish LOL.”
Another wrote: “The fact that you learned good boy in Spanish,” with a sad emoji.
A third said: “The thought of a person learning a new language for their new pup has me tearing up rn.”
Someone else shared a list of Spanish phrases she could try with Max.
They said: “Quieto = stay, vamos = let’s go, comida = food, galleta = treat. These are not universal, but work for my chi.”
